Ultrasound technology has been used to provide a glimpse of the womb, and more importantly, used as a diagnostic test for fetal abnormalities. 2D Ultrasound scanning is a versatile, comfortable and safe diagnostic method in checking for problems and getting information about your baby.
Ultrasound services performed early in your pregnancy are used to determine:
- Presence of more than one fetus
- Estimation of your due date
- Check for birth defects that affect the brain or spinal cord
Later in pregnancy, ultrasound may be used to determine:
- Health of the baby
- The size and position of the fetus placenta and amniotic fluid
- Baby’s expected weight
Oroville Hospital features 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging. They are used for non-diagnostic imaging to enhance prenatal bonding with your child. 3D and 4D ultrasounds work similar to 2D ultrasound. The differences are that the 3D ultrasound provides you with a full 3D image of your baby, while 4D ultrasound creates a live video effect of your baby, making it possible to see your baby smile or yawn!
The 3D/4D fetal imaging ultrasound does not replace diagnostic medical exams as ordered by your medical provider. Prior to scheduling your appointment, we require that you are currently receiving treatment with a health care provider for prenatal care. This is a voluntary non diagnostic exam, however, incidental fetal/uterine abnormalities may be noticed. In that case, your doctor will be notified. We cannot guarantee clear images or be liable for incorrect gender determinations. Images are dependent upon the baby’s position, amniotic fluid, placental location and other maternal factors.We do encourage expecting parents to discuss this optional procedure with your health care provider.

What is the best timing for a 3D/4D ultrasound?
For the best results, we suggest having a 3D/4D ultrasound between 28-30 weeks of pregnancy. Having your ultrasound during this time frame allows you to see more features of your baby. Before 26 weeks your baby has very little fat under their skin, so the bones of their face will show through. After 34 weeks, the baby’s head may go deep down in the mother’s pelvis, so you may not be able to see the baby’s face.
Does 3D/4D ultrasound take the place of an ultrasound at my doctor's office?
No, 3D/4D ultrasound is a voluntary imaging service and does not that the place of a regular ultrasound. We require that women are currently receiving treatment with a health care provider for prenatal care. It is important that you still receive your routine diagnostic ultrasounds prior to obtaining your 3D/4D ultrasound.
Will I be guaranteed a clear picture of my baby?
Unfortunately, there are no guarantees we will get a clear picture during your ultrasound session. Most of the time we are able to get a beautiful images of your baby, however it ultimately depends on your baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid, location of the placenta and maternal factors.
Can you determine the baby’s gender during the 2D/3D/4D ultrasound?
Yes, in most cases we can provide confirmation of the baby’s gender during your scan, typically after 20 weeks. Your baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid, location of the placenta and maternal factors will determine if we are able to visualize the baby’s gender at the time of the ultrasound.
Is the 3D/4D ultrasound covered by insurance?
No, this is a voluntary elective imaging service, therefore your insurance company will not be billed. Payment is due in full at the time of your scan.
How should I prepare for my 3D/4D ultrasound?
To prepare for your ultrasound be well hydrated by drinking plenty of water before your appointment. This will assure there is plenty of clear amniotic fluid to enhance the baby’s image. Please bring any prior ultrasound reports if available. Family is welcomed to accompany you for your ultrasound, speak to the office to confirm room capacity size for your visit.
