Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the study of work. More specifically, ergonomics is the science that addresses the design of workstations, production systems and work environments to ensure the health and safety of workers. When a proper "fit" between worker and work task is achieved, efficiency and productivity are enhanced and the risk of injury and occurrence of musculoskeletal disorder is reduced.

Since 1981, musculoskeletal disorders - such as tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and low back strain - which lead to worker's compensation claims have increased from 18% to 62%. An estimated 1.8 million claims are filed every year at an average cost of $20,700 each. These costs are passed on to business owners in the form of higher insurance premiums.

Because of this significant occurrence rate, reducing injuries and worker's compensation claims is cost-effective and makes excellent business sense. Many businesses have experienced dramatic reductions in injuries and lost workdays after implementing an ergonomics program.

At Golden Valley Outpatient Rehabilitation, our highly trained staff will help you achieve your production goals while limiting injury and work loss. Our ergonomics programs are tailored to your specific business needs.

Lymphedema Management
Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid in body tissues, most often in the arms and/or legs, which causes mild to grossly disfiguring swelling. lymphedema can result from impaired or missing lymph vessels, or when lymph vessels are damaged or removed (often in connection with surgery or breast cancer treatment).

If left untreated, lymphedema can lead to loss of function and vulnerability to infections such as cellulitis. Lymphedema is a lifelong condition without a cure, however Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) can assist in managing this disease process. CDT consists of manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging, proper skin care and diet, compression garments (sleeves, stockings, etc.), exercise, and a prophylactic regimen.

Lymphedema should not be confused with other causes of swelling. If you feel you may suffer from lymphedema, talk to your doctor. With a doctor's order, our experienced therapists can provide complete lymphedema assessment and treatment.
