Empowering & Educating Mothers

Empowering & Educating Mothers

Learning that you are pregnant is an exciting moment and can bring about a mix of emotions, particularly for first-time mothers-to-be. There is a lot to consider, from proper nutrition throughout your pregnancy to labor decisions when those nine months are coming to a close.

Whether you’re just beginning to grow your family or already a parent, Oroville Hospital’s obstetric team is here to guide patients and their partners through preconception, pregnancy, delivery and postpartum experiences.

If your pregnancy is considered normal or high risk, our extensive team of board certified obstetricians, midwives, maternity nurses and lactation consultants provide a comforting pregnancy and delivery experience based on best practices and the highest quality care and safety standards.

It is important to us to build a relationship with the mothers-to-be. As a result, women may feel more comfortable expressing concerns or asking questions. One of the pillars in our childbirth services department is to educate and empower our patients so they can be a part of their care and have the kind of birth they're desiring.

Amanda Votaw, Director of Maternal and Newborn Services, has been with Oroville Hospital for over eight months and believes that a mother’s birthing experience is truly special in our unit, “My favorite thing about Oroville Hospital’s OB department is the fact that we are a small hospital, and a small unit, so the staff has time to give patients one-on-one care and hopefully achieve the birth plan of your dreams.”

Additionally, women get to experience a full range of care services, including prenatal care, labor and delivery services, postpartum care, family planning, and well women visits, all through Oroville Hospital and its providers.

This month, the hospital hosted a community meet & greet with its childbirth services team. New and existing patients had the opportunity to ask questions, gather helpful resources, tour our facilities and meet our obstetricians, midwives, maternity nurses and lactation consultant.

“I absolutely love the fact that every team members knows one another in the department,” expressed a first-time mother, and new patient, who attended the event. “It brings me so much comfort knowing that I have such a knowledgeable and caring team to help bring my baby into the world.”

Attendees were also invited to participate in a six-week prepared childbirth class, free of charge. It meets weekly; typically between twenty-eight and thirty weeks gestation. The classes are taught by an RN from the OB department who is very passionate about teaching this course and loves doing it.

The classes also provide instruction from certified breastfeeding educators and consultants, as well as advice on positions for pushing, positions for comfort, nutrition in pregnancy, and newborn feeding and safety issues.

One of our team’s main focus is to educate and empower our patients, so women can be part of their own healthcare team. We ensure their needs, wishes, and thoughts are all taken into consideration. We look forward to continuing to care for mothers, and their family, throughout their health journey at Oroville Hospital.
