Oroville Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received Healthgrades’ 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award™, ranking among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for patient safety. This designation is awarded to hospitals that have shown superior performance when it comes to preventing serious and potentially avoidable complications for patients during their hospital stay.
According to Healthgrades, an average of 270,457 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals, as a group from 2012 from 2014, performed similarly to hospitals performing better than expected on each of the 13 patient safety indicators evaluated.

Led by Matthew Fine, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Oroville Hospital’s Patient Safety program has grown and evolved since its implementation in 2005. Under his guidance and medical expertise, staff members from all areas of the hospital have collaborated to develop initiatives and procedures proven to be effective at ensuring patients receive quality and timely care. One such initiative has led to significant decreases in clostridium difficile rates which are currently the lowest of any hospital in Butte County and among the lowest in Northern California. Clostridium difficile is a bowel infection that can be a serious complication of medical care.
“Oroville Hospital has a number of care systems in place for conditions such as stroke, pneumonia and heart failure to ensure each patient receives consistent treatment,” said Dr. Fine. “Through continued attention to detail, evaluation and communication among medical staff, we are able to ensure our patients have positive health outcomes during their stay.”
