Responsibilities: 

Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) participates as part of the team of nursing staff; deliv­ering basic nursing care to patients of all ages, pediat­ric to geriatric. Performs general duties and uses the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The PCT assists in coordinating interdepartmental patient care activities. The PCT works closely with the Charge Nurse to ensure Physicians orders are completed. Knowledge of phone and nurse call system. Customer Care Service is a Priority.

    • Special Procedures
  • May arrange transfers and prints/sends charts for transfers
  • May arrange appointments for patients
  • Scans all incoming chart information in proper sequence
  • Demonstrates excellent telephone skills:
    • Knowledge of all phone functions
    • Politely answers all calls and deescalates upset or angry callers
    • Identifies Unit, Name and Title
    • Demonstrates how to place emergency calls
    • Calls Physician when requested 
  • Takes patient and family preferences into consideration
  • Reports incoming information to the Charge Nurse or RN
  • Greets patients, visitors, family and friends
  • Accurate observation recording and reporting of vital signs
  • Accurate recording and reporting of I/O
  • Accurate recording and reporting of weights
  • Accurate recognition of a pat­ient in acute distress and reporting of condition
  • Recording and reporting of patient skin condition
  • Identifies and reports problems based on patient observations
  • Evaluates patient's response to interventions and reports to charge nurse
  • Establishes priorities for patient care activities
  • Provides basic nursing care for patients under supervision of licensed nurse
  • Reports changes in patient's status, to the charge nurse and staff caring for patient
  • Documents nursing care consistent with hospital charting standards
  • Orients patients and family to unit environment
  • Relates unit policy regarding visitors to family and friends
  • Gives accurate report to RN
  • Reports extraordinary patient problems to Supervisor, or Administrator as necessary.  Completes MERS reports
  • Follows chain of command to resolve patient or employee problems
  • Complies with hospital policies procedures for selected precautions i.e. seizure, suicide
  • Assist in preparing patient for operating room
  • Uses principles of body mechanics in mobilizing patient or object
    • Asks for help when lifting heavy patients or uses assistive devices
  • Complies with unit policies for immobilization and restraints
  • Complies with unit policies for electrical safety
  • Incorporates infection control principles in practice
  • Demonstrates skills related to the management of emergency situations
  • Complies with unit policy for cardio-pulmonary arrest
  • Demonstrates how to place STAT and all Code Calls
  • States hospital DNR/DNI policy
  • Complies with policy regarding risk management
  • Assists with PI studies.
    • Makes suggestions for studies
    • Responds to corrective plans
  • Establishes the knowledge to locate Oroville Hospitals policies and procedure on the computer system.
  • Practices within scope
  • Takes action based on constructive performance evaluations and feedback
  • Takes responsibility for helping to meet own learning needs
  • Maintains confidentiality when interacting with patients, families, personnel, and the public
  • Responsible for maintaining current licenses/certificates on file
  • Completes assignments, prior to end of shift
  • Attends 75% of scheduled staff meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Functional Demands

Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with help.
