Job Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for total patient care through implementation of the nursing process.

Duties

  • Responsible for total patient care and patient teaching
  • Provides nursing care to all patient’s of all ages
  • Admit patients to the unit
  • Conducts an initial and ongoing assessment designed to gather data relevant to the patient’s individual needs and age group
  • Recognize risks, problems and complications related to surgery procedures through knowledge of physical assessment
  • Explain surgical procedures and special procedures to patient pre-procedure; give specific instructions about patient care; verify consents
  • Create a wholesome atmosphere for patients to reduce pre-operative anxiety through reassurance and emotional support
  • Recognize drug reactions and post-operative complications; refer to attending surgeon or to anesthesia personnel
  • Able to operate emergency equipment; check equipment for malfunctions
  • Follow pre-operative and post-operative nursing protocol regarding patient admission and discharge
  • Teach student nurses and LVNs assigned in the unit
  • Support the philosophy of the unit and nursing services
  • Be able to perform and administer ordered drugs and treatments
  • Counsel patients post-operatively; explain post-operative instructions related to the surgical procedure, discharge instructions and return visits
  • Responsible for own staff development by attending in-service programs, also responsible for obtaining CE units applicable to ACS
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Lifting Requirements:Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
