Qualifications:

  • Current American Heart Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross for healthcare providers
  • BSN preferred
  • Completion of crisis prevention training
  • Principles and practices of general psychiatric nursing care, as defined by the State of California licensing requirements.
  • Principles of providing functional direction and training.
  • Principles, practices and methods of community behavioral health treatment including interviewing, assessment and family and group counseling.

Qualifications:

Job Summary

The Psychiatry RN Nurse Manager will be responsible for leading the development of an integrated nursing team approach. They will work directly with the Director in development of the Psychiatric Program and of the nursing and care staff including education, department competencies, evaluation, performance correction, patient safety and customer service related issues. The Psychiatry RN Nurse Manager will assist nursing and care staff in reaching their full potential at each stage of their professional development. The focus will be on developing and enhancing clinical knowledge, technical skills, clinical decision making skills, professional performance standards and inter-personal skills that nursing and care staff use to provide quality services. The Psychiatry RN Manager will be responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating services and activities associated with Oroville Hospital. They will be responsible for establishing and monitoring clinical performance criteria, responsible for assuring compliance with psychiatric regulatory requirements, oversees the established effective treatment plans for selected patients, utilization of discharge planning techniques to enhance movement of patients to appropriate levels of care, and responsible for staff education and direction.

Duties

  • Supervises the psychiatric program
  • Provide leadership in clinical practice and act as a resource and role model for clinical practice
  • Provide leadership, supervision and support to nursing and care staff in the provision of clinical/care support services in a professional manner
  • Monitor, evaluate, and correct staff performance relating to patient care/clinical practice and assist the Director in raising the standards of practice
  • Responsible for the oversight of nursing and care staff
  • Provide psychiatric clinical advice and supervision to nursing/care staff.
  • Identify the psychiatric training needs of nursing/care staff and facilitate how to appropriately meet those needs.
  • Facilitate psychiatric clinical practice training, in line with Oroville Hospital’s values and ethos, to nursing and care staff as required.
  • Assist in coordinating daily staffing to ensure that all shifts are covered
  • Attend management development or training event organized or specified by Oroville Hospital
  • Attend management and other meetings as required by Oroville Hospital
  • Ability to take responsibility for own personal development and maintain professional knowledge/skills by keeping abreast of developments in nursing practice, nursing literature and recent nursing research.
  • Maintains up-to-date licensure and registrations, certifications and health records as applicable to position

Psychiatric Patient Responsibilities:

  • Assess the clinical competence of care staff in clinical practice as part of a person centered approach. Oversees the assessment of patients upon admission to unit and makes presentation of physical and behavioral condition findings to attending physicians. 
  • Oversees the provision of professional nursing care to patients; observes and charts critical signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
  • Oversees the provision of equipment and supplies required for patient examination or treatment; observers and records patient reactions and behaviors and explains procedures.
  • Oversees the administration of oral and hypodermic medications and observes and records their effects; oversees all orders from physician to facilitate patient treatment.
  • Participates in the preparation of the nursing component of patient treatment plans, including physical assessments on new patients, as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team; oversees and participates in evaluation and therapeutic activities.
  • Performs crisis intervention, in person and on the phone, management of assaultive behavior, and general counseling; coordinates or arranges for the provision of needed services including emergency detention when patient is in danger to self or others.
  • Oversees the provision of supportive services including individual, group or family counseling, and various group activities such as exercise and art.
  • Confers with medical, behavioral health and inter-agency staff regarding client needs and ways of improving staff's ability to positively impact clients; serves as case coordinator for assigned patients or clients, as needed.
  • Participates in case conferences and provides input regarding behavioral health cases and problems.
  • Oversees the provision of medication refills per physician’s orders and policies and procedures; provides needed information to pharmacies and insurance companies.
  • Oversees the coordination of care with primary providers, pharmacies, laboratories, schools, medical facilities and personnel, probation, social services, and other government agencies.
  • Treats patients, visitors, co-workers, physicians, auxilians and staff in other departments with dignity, courtesy and respect
  • Recognizes and responds to age and cultural practices of others in a sensitive way
  • Recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of others
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt communication style and format to different audiences
  • Organizes and completes assigned work within established time frames
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients, employees, visitors and hospital operations
  • Uses discretion when discussing sensitive information
  • Adheres to the standards of conduct as outlined in the hospital’s corporate compliance policy and states how to report incidents of suspected non-compliance
  • Fosters personal accountability in others by sharing information, resources and knowledge, building trust, and supporting efforts to achieve desired outcomes
  • Implements standard precautions for all patient contact and complies with all posted transmission precautions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Lifting Requirements: Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with help.
