Qualifications:

- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration (MHA), or related field preferred.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required; Certification in Maternal Newborn Nursing (RNC-MNN) or Nursing Leadership preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in Mother Baby/Postpartum or Women’s Services, with at least 2 – 3 years in a leadership role.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of perinatal regulations, quality initiatives, and evidence-based postpartum care practices. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Job Summary
The Director of Maternal and Newborn Services is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic planning, and operational management of the Mother Baby Unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care for postpartum mothers and newborns. The Director works with outpatient clinics to ensure continuity of optimal maternal care. This role includes oversight of staffing, budgeting, compliance with regulatory standards, and quality improvement initiatives while fostering a culture of excellence in patient care and staff engagement.
Duties

Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Develops and implements department goals, policies, and procedures aligned with hospital-wide strategic objectives.
- Provides leadership and mentorship to nursing staff, fostering a positive work environment.
- Ensures that care delivery reflects best practices, evidence-based protocols, and patient-centered care.
- Collaborates with obstetricians, neonatologists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals to enhance care coordination.
- Coordinates operational functions with the Director of Outpatient Services to ensure care that is responsive to the needs of the community.

Clinical & Operational Oversight
- Maintains 24/7 responsibility for the daily operations and performance of the Mother Baby Unit.
- Ensures appropriate staffing levels, scheduling, and skill mix to provide safe and effective patient care.
- Oversees patient flow, bed management, and efficient discharge planning.
- Evaluates and improves workflows to enhance patient experience.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensures compliance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and other regulatory bodies.
- Monitors and enhances patient safety initiatives, infection prevention, and risk management strategies.
- Leads quality improvement projects related to maternal and newborn care, including breastfeeding support and neonatal safety.
- Maintains compliance with Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) standards.

Staff Development & Performance Management
- Oversees recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of nursing and support staff.
- Conducts regular performance evaluations, coaching, and competency assessments.
- Supports ongoing education, certification opportunities, and continuing education for staff.

Financial & Resource Management
- Manages the department’s budget, ensuring financial efficiency and cost-effective care delivery.
- Oversees capital equipment purchases and maintenance related to postpartum and neonatal care.
- Collaborates with hospital administration to optimize reimbursement and cost-containment strategies.

Patient & Family Engagement
- Promotes a patient- and family-centered approach to care, ensuring satisfaction and positive patient experiences.
- Implements initiatives to support breastfeeding, maternal mental health, and newborn education.
- Addresses patient concerns and grievances promptly and effectively.
