Psychiatry Residents Making a Positive Impact on the Hospital and Community
Earlier this year, Oroville Hospital announced its inaugural Psychiatry Resident Class. Since the program kicked off in July, residents have been hands-on, developing the skills and confidence to navigate the realities of psychiatric care and have made a tangible impact in the community.
The beginning of the program has residents focused on providing quality care to patients with neurological diseases, understanding the critical link between neurology and psychiatry, attend bedside clinical teaching and didactic teaching. With daily supervision, they manage acute psychiatric crises and provide emergency psychiatric care in both clinic and emergency department settings, gaining experience with various urgent psychiatric presentations, including substance abuse problems, psychoses, adolescent mental disorders, psychiatric trauma and crises.
During the residents' first two years, they have multiple rotations in Oroville Hospital’s inpatient psychiatric unit. They are collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, case managers and nurses. Residents rotate among different teams with focuses on different types of psychopathology, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, substance-use disorders, and suicidal or homicidal ideation.
“Watching our psychiatric residents evolve into confident, capable clinicians has been one of our greatest successes. Their impact is felt every day in patient outcomes, in team collaborations, and across our hospital community,” expressed Program Director, Lynne Pappas, MD.

Pictured here are moments captured by residents since their time began at Oroville Hospital. They have built meaningful connections and become a part of our close-knit community that truly values mental health care. Their hard work and dedication has proven they are as dynamic and vital as the community they serve.
