Job Summary
Orthopedic Assistants need a strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology and expertise in different materials and equipment involved in casts, splints and braces. The Orthopedic Assistant must be able to work effectively under stress or emergency situations. The Orthopedic Assistants in the office setting is a specialty requiring a variety of skills, including but not limited to: Receptionist, registration duties, data collection for billing procedures, diagnostic and procedure coding, charge posting, maintains appointment schedules, schedules surgeries/ procedures and obtains appropriate authorizations and referrals, provides appropriate patient instructions per physician orders. A Orthopedic Assistants can perform non-invasive routine technical support services under the supervision of an authorized advanced practice provider.
Duties
- Fitting and Applying pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods
- Helping prepare and apply casts and orthopedic appliances
- Removing casts and splints
- May assist with orthopedic procedures done in the office as directed by the physician
- Give patient instructions concerning cast care and the use of orthopedic appliances
- May prepare and set up traction as requested by the physician
- Clean and stock the cast and soft goods room
- Order special supplies and equipment
- Maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow
- Escorts patients to exam rooms, interviews patients, measure vital signs; including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patients chart
- Gathers data relevant to the patient’s age group and individual needs
- Assists physician and physician assistant in exam rooms
- Give instructions to patients as instructed by the physician or physician assistant
- Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, instruments, prepare sterilization as required
- Register patients for office visits with accurate demographic information
- Requests co-payments or cash payments from each patient
- Triage and process messages from patients and front office staff to physician and physician assistants
- Completes data collection for billing purposes, diagnostic and procedure codes, post patients charges into computer
- Administer or handle medications
- Schedules procedures and follow up appointments with accurate patient information
- Gets authorization from insurance companies for approved referrals and completes any necessary forms related to authorizations (TAR’s)
- Confirms appointment schedule and follow-up of missed appointments
- Maintains all logs and required documentation
- Maintains a neat, clean and functional work station
- Maintains positive public relations image with peers, patients and visitors by presenting a positive, helpful attitude
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional publications
- Performs other duties as assigned
Job Limitations
Orthopedic Assistants Do Not:
- Administer lidocaine or anesthetics in any form
- Assess or interpret patient conditions or results
- Administer heparin
- Administer insulin
- Give medications that require continual monitoring (emergency situations)
- Start of disconnect IV's or administer injection or medications into IV's
- Insert a urinary catheter
- May not perform telephone triage
- May not inject collagen or use laser to remove hair, wrinkles, scars, moles or other blemishes
- May not administer chemotherapy or monitor chemotherapy patients
- May not administer PPD
- May not give medications to pediatric patients
- Cannot interpret skin tests

Lifting Requirements: The Job requires physical effort, including the ability to sit or stand for an extended time and to push, pull, squat, twist, turn, lift, bend, stoop and reach overhead.
