Radiology is more than simple x-rays and Oroville Hospital has the equipment and knowledgeable staff to provide excellent patient care. Imaging services offered for outpatients and patients admitted to Oroville Hospital include:


 

Radiography

Radiographs are the most common exam for diagnostic imaging. A tube generates an x-ray beam that passes through the body. This beam changes as it passes through the different tissues. After exiting the body, the x-ray is received by a detector and an image is created of the anatomy. 

Fluoroscopy

A continuous x-ray beam is passed through a region of the body and sent to a video monitor for evaluating anatomy and certain functions such as swallowing or passage of food through the bowel. Fluoroscopy may also be used to perform procedures for diagnosis and treatment. To learn more about fluoroscopy exams, click here.

CT (Computed Tomography)

CT uses multiple x-rays and computers to create more detailed images of structures in the body. This exam may use contrast that is swallowed or given inside a blood vessel for improved visualization of blood vessels and tissues for diagnosis.   

PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography)

PET-CT combines positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with computed tomography (CT) imaging during one appointment. This combined imaging technique provides excellent detail of a patient's anatomy and functional activity of the tissues. The combination of these two imaging techniques offers a more comprehensive understanding of the body than either PET or CT alone. 

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) 

Magnetic Resonance Imaging creates images of the body using magnetic fields. This technique creates excellent images of soft tissues and may also use contrast. MRI does not use ionizing radiation. 

Bone Densitometry

Bone density scanning uses x-rays to measure bone loss. For more information about bone density scans, click here

Ultrasound

Ultrasound exams are performed by a technologist who will place a probe onto the skin using a water-soluble gel to create excellent anatomic images. Ultrasound is commonly used during pregnancy to monitor fetal development. Ultrasound may also be used to evaluate the health of blood vessels, liver, kidneys, gallbladder and breast. Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. 

Breast Imaging

We utilize mammography and ultrasound for breast imaging. Our digital breast tomosynthesis technology provides 3D images of breast tissue. Rather than the flat, 2D images taken by traditional mammography machines, 3D mammography allows radiologists to examine individual layers of tissue. Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine can be used for diagnosis and treatment. Nuclear medicine may provide functional information about the body that is not possible using other imaging methods. A patient will receive a radioactive substance, called a radiopharmaceutical, to examine organ function and structure. 

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists perform minimally invasive procedures using imaging, such as ultrasound and fluoroscopy, for guidance. This subspecialty has evolved rapidly since the 1960's and is a unique combination of imaging, procedures, medicine, and technology. Our interventional radiology service offers a variety of services for outpatients and those patients admitted to our hospital to establish diagnoses and administer therapies.
