Dr. Alice Alino, a pediatrician at Oroville Hospital, recently returned from a Medical Mission to the Philippines where she was able to provide pediatric services to those in need. Oroville Hospital donated $1,000 to help with and assist Dr. Alino in her charitable work. The mission helped over 1,500 patients and beneficiaries at the Payatas Dumpsite and 30 children at a local orphanage.
Payatas is a village in the 2nd Legislative District of Quezon City, it is the largest open dumpsite in the Philippines where thousands of residents depend on the landfill for their livelihood as scavengers, waste-pickers, and junkshop operators. It is a very poor community that is in dire need of basic medical services.
There were close to 100 volunteers, 30 of which were doctors, dentists and nurses. The medical services included pediatrics, orthopedics, endocrinology, obstetrics-gynecology, internal medicine, and dentistry. The group was able to provide services including ultrasound pre-natal screenings, anemia screenings, and diabetes screenings for those in need.
Dr. Alino was very humbled by the experience and tries to participate in medical missions as often as possible, she said, “It was a very fulfilling mission and a very effective one. At the end of the day, the patients had their check-up and onsite treatment, were given ample medicinal supply along with “goody bags” containing toiletries and donated clothes.”
Dr. Alino said, “I am very grateful that Oroville Hospital supports my participation in medical missions. I am thankful for their wonderful donation, with it we were able to bring good health and Christmas cheers to an impoverished, well deserving community.”
